Information about the Selection of a Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis

New Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis appointed

On 28 January 2009 the MPA welcomed the appointment of Sir Paul Stephenson as 45th Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.

Below is an outline of the recruitment process followed to select the current Commissioner:

  • The Home Office shortlist panel and shortlist interview panel, chaired by the Home Office Permanent Secretary, met and complied with public appointment principles.
  • The panel included: the Director General of the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism, two MPA Members and an independent member.
  • HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary acted as professional advisor to the panel.
  • The MPA selection panel then interviewed the shortlisted candidates.
  • The Home Secretary, together with the Mayor of London, interviewed the eligible candidates following recommendations from the MPA and representations from the Mayor.
  • The appointment was made by Her Majesty The Queen following a recommendation by the Home Secretary under the Police Act 1996.
  • Before making this recommendation the Home Secretary had regard to recommendations made to her by the MPA and representations from the Mayor of London.
