Kirsten Hearn's background has been in public service, training, community action and creative arts.

She currently leads an empowerment coaching and training consultancy supporting individuals and organisations to develop their services, people and products to meet the challenges of a new era.

Previously she worked for sixteen years in local government where she led
corporate, strategic organisation and staff development initiatives, specialising in equality and diversity.

Kirsten is a non-executive board member of Transport for London where, amongst other roles, she works on social inclusion transport issues, health and safety strategic issues, best value scrutiny and community consultation. She is also a member of Equality 2025 (UK Advisory Network on Disability Equality), which advises the government on the implementation of the "Improving The Life Chances of Disabled People" report.

Kirsten has been a freelance equality trainer since 1983 and has been active in voluntary organisations since 1980. She is a member of the Board of the Consortium of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community and Voluntary Organisations, where she chairs their HR sub committee.. She is also a sculptor, writer and singer-songwriter. She is an NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) master practitioner and a certified NLP coach. She has an MA from the Royal College of Art in environmental media and design education.

Kirsten says:

"As a blind woman I have developed strategies and support systems to overcome the many challenges I face in life."

Of her role as the chair of the MPA Equal Opportunities and Diversity Board (EODB), Kirsten says:

"The MPS and MPA faced many challenges in the last four years and the EODB, under my chairpersonship, has held the MPS to account over many important issues including stop and search; dealing with hate crimes; the whole gender agenda for both staffing and the way the police respond to women's concerns; the opportunities offered by the extension of the Disability Discrimination Act to police officers to make the MPS more disability friendly; and making the relationship between the police and London's diverse communities better. In particular, I drove an assault on the macho, militaristic, boys club culture of the MPS through the work of EODB and my participation in people focussed reviews, to drive it forward to becoming a fit organisation to partner London's diverse communities in making London the safest city in the world."
