John has over 14 years experience of working with "hard to reach communities" in London, gaining considerable knowledge and expertise working with the Metropolitan Police Service, drug and alcohol agencies, local health services and homeless peoples agencies. John's career profile has ranged from being a hostel worker, a youth and community leader to a health promotions specialist and co-ordinator. John has a wide-ranging number of qualifications including an advanced diploma in counselling and psychotherapy, a diploma in drama, music and dance, a certificate in mediation and conflict resolution, training and Restorative Justice. He has an MSc. in Systemic Management and Consultation. He is currently studying Sign Language stage 2 and Lip Reading at City Lit. John was the director of Vauxhall City Farm, a referral order panel leader for Tower Hamlets Youth Offending Team, and is still Chair of Riding for the Disabled Vauxhall Group. John is a member of the MPA Professional Standards Committee, chair of the Stop & Search Scrutiny Board, and sits on the Coordination of Policing Committee. He is also the Authority's lead member for the following issues: Stop & Search Recommendation 61; Independent Custody Visiting in London; special constables, volunteers and cadets in the MPS; training, diversity, custody matters, including immigration; the building of new custody suites and the retention of staff. He sits on the Association of Police Authorities (APA) as a plenary member. Also for the APA he is vice chair of the Race and Diversity Policy Group, chair of the Stop and Search Practitioners network and chairs the Community Engagement Review Board. John is also a member of the Home Office funded BME Trust and Confidence Group and the BME retention and progression group working to improve conditions for BME staff within the police service. He is a member of the Association of London Government's Crime and Public Protection Forum. John says, " I have a pragmatic "can do" personality and as a Londoner feel responsible for ensuring minority groups are heard and listened to. I want to be involved from the inside transferring my skills into something I passionately believe in. I look forward to being part of an Authority that can make real changes in the way the police become more transparent and accountable for the way they police London and our many diverse communities".
