Recruitment of Independent members of the Metropolitan Police Authority

The closing date for Independent Member applications has now passed (4 June) and no further applications can be accepted.

The response - over 130 applications - was very encouraging. The process of deciding on a shortlist for the first stage interviews will now start. These interviews will be held on 2nd, 3rd and 7th July. The final interviews - for those who are successful at the first stage interviews - will be held in mid or late July, although dates have not yet been fixed.

Do you want to:

  • influence the way London is policed?
  • improve the performance of the police?
  • ensure the police treat everyone fairly and equally?
  • contribute to our goal of making London the safest major city in the world?

If the answer is yes and you have the time and commitment to make a real contribution to the way London’s diverse communities are policed, you should consider becoming an independent member of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA).

The MPA plays a key part in the governance of London by rigorously holding the Commissioner and the Metropolitan Police to account. Challenges ahead that you would be involved with include
making London’s police services more reflective of local needs and engaging more widely with all
our communities, planning for the Olympics, overseeing effective counter-terrorist activity and
achieving continued value for money in policing the capital.

Almost half the MPA’s 23 members are independent members appointed for the skills and experience they can contribute. We are now inviting applications for these positions for the next term of office, which starts on 1 October. A range of experiences could equip you for the role, from business, management, finance, public service or community work, to the equalities and diversity field.

What will be important is that you can demonstrate strong leadership skills, a commitment to
improving the police service and a real understanding of London’s diverse communities.
Being an MPA member is a public service and you will be expected to uphold the high standards of
office that the public has a right to expect from those making decisions on their behalf. These are
not salaried positions but successful candidates will be entitled to an allowance that reflects the
time commitment required.

To be considered, you must be aged 18 or over, have lived or worked in London for at least 12
months, and not be employed by or elected to a London local authority. There are other disqualifications, outlined in the information pack. You must be able to commit the equivalent of at least two days a week to this important work.

The MPA is an equal opportunity organisation, fully committed to diversity.
