Members

The membership of the Authority has changed following the mayoral and local elections 1 May 2008.

At its annual meeting on 29 May the Authority made the following appointments:

  • Chair of the Authority – Len Duvall
  • First Deputy Chair of the Authority – Kit Malthouse
  • Deputy Chairs of the Authority – Reshard Auladin and Cindy Butts

These appointments expire in September this year, as from 1 October the Mayor is able to chair the Authority and he has stated his intention of doing so. From October the Mayor will also be able to appoint the MPA’s Deputy Chair(s).

The position of first deputy is a new appointment for the Authority. Its creation is a recognition that Mayoral involvement in chairing the MPA will inevitably require some changes to the way the Authority conducts its business. As he is also the First Deputy Mayor for Policing, Kit Malthouse is well placed to contribute to this process and to provide continuity once the Mayor has joined the MPA as its chair.

In summary, the role of First Deputy Chair will include:

  • deputising for the Chair as required
  • sharing some of the Chair’s responsibilities for representing the MPA on pan-London and national bodies
  • portfolio lead for the Metropolitan Police Service improvement programme
  • leading the budget scrutiny of business group budgets
  • working with the chair and other members to ensure a smooth transition to new working processes

Reshard Auladin and Cindy Butts will deputise for the Chair and First Deputy Chair as required and will continue to lead on their chair and portfolio responsibilities, such as professional standards, ISIT, community engagement and citizen focus.

The Metropolitan Police Authority has twenty-three members, twelve from the London Assembly appointed by the Mayor, four magistrates appointed by the Greater London Magistrates Courts Association and seven independent members, one appointed directly by the Home secretary, with the other vacancies appointed after being advertised openly. Members are appointed for a period of four years. The Chair of the MPA is chosen by the members themselves, all of whom are eligible.

Each member is linked with at least one borough. This means that wherever you live a member is taking a keen interest in policing issues in your area.
