Mayor of London
Boris Johnson has been Mayor of London since May 2008. Previously he was MP for Henley on Thames from 2001 – 2008 and held shadow government posts as Vice Chairman, Shadow Minister for the Arts and Shadow Minister of Higher Education. Following changes in legislation that granted extra powers to the London mayor, Boris Johnson became chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority on 1 October 2008.
Boris Johnson’s manifesto pledges put crime reduction and community safety centre stage.
In a media career spanning 20 years he has been a columnist for the Daily Telegraph, Editor of the Spectator from 1999 to 2005, and has also produced a TV series on Roman History, as well as several books. A passionate cyclist, he enjoys painting, playing tennis. He spends much of his time bringing up his four children with his wife Marina in North London.
