MPA membership of outside organisations

Summary

Members of the Authority are asked on an annual basis to appoint MPA representatives to a number of outside organisations.

In respect of those organisations with the highest membership fees, it is appropriate to review annually whether continued membership represents value for money for the MPA.

A. Recommendation

That the Authority confirms or otherwise its membership of the organisations.

B. Supporting information

1. The MPA are represented on number of outside organisations and each year at the annual meeting members are asked to nominate representatives.

2. Members are asked which organisations they wish to continue membership, noting that any decision to withdraw from some organisations requires giving notice.

3. The leading outside organisations where the MPA are represented are:

• Association of Police Authorities
• Association of London Government
• Local Government Association

Annual fees and notice period

4. The membership costs for these three organisations for 2005/06 are:

• Association of Police Authorities £111,342
• Association of London Government £ 22,556
• London Government Association £ 12,905

5. If members were to consider withdrawing membership from any of these organisations a notice period of one year from the 31 March is required.

6. Appendix 1 provides members with details of current members appointments to these three organisations.

There are no race and diversity implications arising from this report.

D. Financial implications

Membership fees for 2005/06 are outlined above. Membership fees for each year are included within the budget submission.
