Crime reporting

The Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) is independent from the Metropolitan Police Service and is not
responsible for receiving or investigating reports of criminal activity.

The Information below will help you to choose to which organisation you wish to report a crime in London - this can be either the police or, should you wish to offer information in confidence and anonymously, the independent charity Crimestoppers.

Reporting an emergency

In an emergency you should call 999. You should use this service to contact police in situations when you need an immediate response.

Call 999 if:

  • a crime is happening now
  • people are injured
  • people are being threatened or are in danger
  • someone suspected of committing a crime is nearby

Reporting non-emergency crime

Reporting to the police

You can report details of non-emergency crime online by visiting the Metropolitan Police Service crime reporting page.

Non-emergency crime includes:

  • criminal damage
  • criminal damage to a motor vehicle
  • hate crimes and hate incidents
  • theft from a motor vehicle
  • theft - but not:
  • robbery (where you or the person you are reporting for was subjected to violence or the threat of violence.)
  • burglary (a building has been broken into)

Reporting to Crimestoppers

If you have information about any crime that you would prefer to offer in confidence and anonymously, you should contact Crimestoppers. Crimestoppers is an independent UK-wide charity working to stop crime.

Visit the Crimestoppers website or call the free and confidential phone line 0800 555 111.
