Message from Boris Johnson, Chair of the MPA

"I am immensely proud of the commitment and dedication that the police display everyday. The Authority will support them in their sterling work and make sure that as many frontline officers as possible are on the streets to make the service more responsive to Londoners' needs.

"Knife crime is the most immediate policing priority and we will continue to build on the successes of Operation Blunt 2. One of the most frequent complaints made to me was that local people did not feel safe on the buses, so we have also acted to kick-start the work of taking back our public spaces, and cutting so-called 'minor crime'.

"Beyond day to day policing to protect our local communities, the MPA and MPS share a clear commitment to safeguard the capital from the continuing threat of terrorism, a reality that needs the utmost perseverance and professionalism.

"Internally, the issues of race and discrimination in the MPS must be examined and that is why I asked MPA member Cindy Butts to confront the key questions, such as the progression of BME candidates through the ranks of the service and the extent to which there is visible and effective leadership around race and faith issues. Racism is unacceptable and must be stamped out."

“Working with the Met, we are tackling the issues Londoners told us worry them most: knife and youth crime, terrorism, safety on our public transport system and dangerous dogs - helping people to feel more confident as they go about their business.

“We have introduced crime mapping so communities know that their local police are tackling the issues that are important to them

“For the future, our new policing strategy ‘Metforward’ will bring forward new thinking to help succeed with our core business - including new thinking on crime statistics, cutting bureaucracy, community engagement and other areas. All these achievements must go hand in hand with improved efficiencies and performance.

“London is in a new economic era and the effects of the Olympics are being felt already. These changes will bring immense challenges but I am confident by working with the Met and our partners we will rise to those challenges.”
