Partnership in policing public order

At today’s meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority, the complex problems of policing public order, particularly in relation to protests and demonstrations involving visiting heads of state, as well as the big celebrations such as the Notting Hill Carnival and New year’s Eve were widely discussed.

Members noted that the Metropolitan Police were reviewing the strategy for dealing with such occasions, in the light of recent events. The Met affirmed they were very interested in extending lay involvement in event planning, policy making and training in regard to policing strategy for dealing with public order.

Metropolitan Police Authority Chair Toby Harris said:

“These are very difficult issues that require complicated judgements. Having lay members of the Authoirity working with the Police makes sense”.

The Authority agreed that Members would need to make a substantial input and to this end the Authority’s Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee would be working with the Met.

The Metropolitan Police Authority took over responsibility for the Metropolitan Police Service from the Home Secretary on 3 July. The Metropolitan Police Authority held its first meeting on 26 June, 2000 at which Lord Toby Harris was elected Chair and Peter Herbert and Richard Barnes were elected Deputy Chairs.
