New Metropolitan Police recruits starting their training

Rachel Whittaker, Magistrate Member Metropolitan Police Authority, today performed the duty of attestation for the latest batch of Metropolitan Police recruits starting their training at the Police Training College, Hendon. Addressing the recruits, Rachel Whittaker said:

“I am privileged to be the first magistrate and also the first member of the Metropolitan Police Authority to be performing this pleasant duty. In the past, this role has been performed by senior police officers - but as a magistrate I am able to perform this pleasant task today.

“You have chosen a challenging career, a rewarding career and one which will test you to the very limits of your abilities. You will need the wisdom of Solomon and the patience of Job. You could not be joining at a time of greater change and upheaval. The challenges are out there. Crime is rising - particularly street crime - and there are many issues around race and diversity which you will need to understand. Today we recognise that preventing crime is a far more effective use of police time than chasing the symptoms.

“Remember in this country we police by consent. You will no doubt during the next weeks of training have doubts about your chosen career. You will have successes and disappointments and develop a terrific team spirit. But in 18 weeks time you will be out on the beat. You will be responsible for upholding the law and you will also individually be responsible for the reputation of the Metropolitan Police Service which has a proud and distinguished history spanning over 170 years. Treat people as you would wish to be treated. Respect and understand different cultures and perhaps most of all do it with a smile. For some reason police officers often look so unhappy!

“You have a very important job and perhaps it’s worth remembering that from this day your lives have changed. You are now police officers - the people who those in need turn to when they need help. Many people have given their lives in the fight for a decent and free society so remember to do your duty with honesty, integrity and impartiality.”

Mrs Whittaker ended by wishing the recruits all the very best for a long, safe and happy career.

The Metropolitan Police Authority took over responsibility for the Metropolitan Police Service from the Home Secretary on 3 July. The Metropolitan Police Authority held its first meeting on 26 June, 2000 at which Lord Toby Harris was elected Chair and Peter Herbert and Richard Barnes were elected Deputy Chairs.
