MPA to chair enquiry in regard to case brought by Sergeant Virdi

14/00
23 August 2000

Sergeant Gurpal Virdi instituted Employment Tribunal proceedings against the Metropolitan Police citing acts of racism against him. Today the tribunal found against the Met.

After consultation with the Metropolitan Police Authority, the Met has agreed to set up a joint inquiry to review the original investigation, the discipline board and the MPS case presented to the Employment Tribunal.

The Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Toby Harris, announcing that a member of the Authority will chair the inquiry said:

“This case raises major issues. It is right that an inquiry be set up to ensure that lessons are learnt. It is essential that it is a joint MPA and Met inquiry to be chaired by a member of the MPA so that the community and public can be assured that all aspects of the case are properly taken into account.”

Notes to editors

The Metropolitan Police Authority took over responsibility for the Metropolitan Police Service from the Home Secretary on 3 July. The Metropolitan Police Authority held its first meeting on 26 June, 2000 at which Lord Toby Harris was elected Chair and Peter Herbert and Richard Barnes were elected Deputy Chairs.
