Met Police Authority appoints Director of Communications

The Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority, Toby Harris, today announced the appointment of Philip Powell as Director of Communications. Philip will take up the post 30 October 2000.

Philip Powell is presently Press Secretary to the Minister for the Cabinet Office, Mo Mowlam. Before joining the Cabinet Office, he was Regional Director, COI Yorkshire and Humberside and East of England.

Philip Powell
Started his career in the media, working for weekly and regional newspapers, including the Express and Echo, in Devon, and the Western Daily Press, West of England. He joined the Metropolitan Police Directorate of Public Affairs working in the 24-hour Press Bureau in New Scotland Yard, before becoming an Area Press and Publicity Officer covering central and north west London. During this time he covered such major events as the Harrods bombing, Heathrow/Brinks Mat gold bullion robbery, Notting Hill Carnival, Libyan Embassy siege and the Kings Cross Underground Station fire. In February 1988 he joined the Central Office of Information as senior press officer in the South West, rising to Regional Director COI Yorkshire and Humberside and then East of England. Philip joined the Cabinet Office in his present post in January 2000.

The Metropolitan Police Authority took over responsibility for the Metropolitan Police Service from the Home Secretary on 3 July. Lord Toby Harris is the Chair and Peter Herbert and Richard Barnes are Deputy Chairs.
