Consultation top priority for MPA

35/00
28 November 2000

Community consultation and feedback on major policing issues affecting London are to be given top priority by the Metropolitan Police Authority and Metropolitan Police Service.

Following a Best Value review of consultation by a joint MPA and MPS team, a new approach into the way the community is consulted is under consideration.

At its meeting in West London this evening, the MPA’s Consultation, Diversity and Outreach (CDO) committee will be asked to recommend a variety of changes, which are designed to make policing more accountable to Londoners.

CDO Chair R David Muir, said:

"There has been a great deal of consultation in the past between police and the public at borough level, but this has not been coordinated.

"Our aim is to ensure consultation is responsive, community focused, accessible and, not least, accountable.

"We want to give everyone the opportunity to discuss and influence policing priorities and performance. To this end we will be inclusive in our approach, engaging with key community organisations and individuals, including those from minority groups. This will ensure the fullest possible representation."

Implementation of the proposed recommendations will be considered by the MPA’s full meeting in December.
