Review of the Metropolitan Police Authority

53/00
14 December 2000

The Metropolitan Police Authority today agreed to review the way in which it conducts its business following the first six months of its life.

Members of the Authority agreed at their meeting in London to look at their working practices in January next year, almost six months to the day when the Home Secretary handed over responsibility for the Metropolitan Police Service.

The review will look at the terms of reference of MPA committees and panels and how effectively business is conducted. It will also consider possible implications for the Authority of changes to the local authority structure introduced in the Local Government Act 2000.

MPA Chair, Toby Harris said:

‘The MPA has been up and running for almost six months. It is right and proper for us to take a detailed look at our effectiveness and how we conduct our business on behalf of Londoners.

‘We will look in particular at the way in which our committees function, the frequency of meetings and the presentation of papers and reports.’

The MPA has a full Authority meeting once a month. Its committees also meet each month. They are:

  • Co-ordination and Urgency Committee
  • Finance, Planning and Best Value Committee
  • Consultation, Diversity and Outreach Committee
  • Professional Standards and Performance Monitoring Committee
  • Human Resources Committee

The MPA’s Audit Panel meets quarterly.
