The Chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority's Professional Standards Committee is to receive regular progress reports from the senior police officer investigating the fatal shooting of Derek Bennett in Brixton on 16 July 2001.

Richard Sumray, Chair of the Professional Standards and Performance Monitoring Committee said:

"In these very serious incidents it is highly important that we know exactly what is going on and are fully aware of the progress of the investigation.

"By being kept abreast of all aspects of the investigation, we will ensure that valuable lessons learnt from this tragic incident will be carried forward.

"Northumbria Assistant Chief Constable John Scott, appointed by the Police Complaints Authority to investigate the shooting by armed officers of the Metropolitan Police on 16 July, will keep me informed of all developments."
