MPA Recommendation 61 Stop and Search information campaign goes on the road

The Metropolitan Police Authority Stop and Search information trailer will appear at events and festivals throughout London this summer to publicise the London-wide rollout from October 2004 of Recommendation 61 of the Macpherson Report.

Recommendation 61 says that anyone who is stopped by the police should be given a record stating the reason for the stop. Until now only those people stopped and searched have received a written record.

John Roberts, independent member of the MPA and chair of the Recommendation 61 implementation team said:

“We hope that by taking the MPA Stop and Search information trailer out to major summer festivals and events Londoners will have the opportunity to learn about Recommendation 61 and their rights when stopped and searched before the London wide roll out in October 2004. So far the pilot schemes running in Hackney and Tower Hamlets have been very successful.

“Our initial events are this weekend at the Burgess Park Vibrations Festival (Southwark) on Saturday 14 August and the London Mela in Gunnersbury Park (Ealing) on Sunday 15 August 2004. For the first time, representatives from the MPA, MPS officers and staff and community groups will work together to staff the trailer.

“Recommendation 61 of the Macpherson Report was in response to real and widespread mistrust of policing methods. We, together with the MPS, are determined to maintain the support of all Londoners and realise that although the power to stop and search is a valuable tool for policing, it must be carried out with sensitivity and respect. By giving people who are stopped a written record of that stop, we hope to maintain the trust and confidence of all our communities and further develop policing by consent.”

• Mayor’s Thames Festival - Sunday 19 September.
