Unequivocal condemnation of hate crime – MPA

80/04
4 November 2004

Today’s meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority’s Equal Opportunities & Diversity Board (EODB) expressed utter and complete condemnation of all hate crimes and held a two-minute silence for all victims.

Kirsten Hearn, chair of the EODB, said:

“The rise in hate crimes across the capital, including homophobic attacks, as witnessed recently in the tragic and horrific murder of David Morley in the heart of our city, is something that we deplore and are must address.

“No one, of what ever race, religion, sexuality, age, belief, or disability, should have to live in fear and we will work in partnership to ensure that London’s communities can feel safe and confident. The Pan London Race Hate Crime Forum does excellent work encouraging multi-agency good practice across the capital to tackle racial crimes, and we will be considering urgent ways in which to respond to other crimes of hate.”

Kirsten Hearn and fellow MPA member John Roberts will be attending a vigil to be held in commemoration of David Morley in Soho tomorrow (Friday 5 November).
