A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) will be held in meeting room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1 on Thursday 28 September 2006 at 10.00 a.m.

Members will consider the joint MPA and MPS Community Engagement Strategy. This sets out the Met’s responsibility to ensure that London’s communities are properly consulted and explains how community engagement is central to successful policing in the capital.

Len Duvall, chair of the MPA, said:

“Community engagement gives Londoners a more significant voice in policing. The MPA wants the Met to be more responsive to Londoners’ needs and establish procedures for local accountability across the capital.

“Establishing standards and structures to ensure Londoners can influence and shape their policing requirements reflects a fundamental shift in the way policing is carried out in London. The Authority will make sure that clear systems to monitor and scrutinise the outcomes of community engagement are put in place.

“The MPA wants to increase and enhance Londoners’ say in how their city is policed. Public participation must be recognised as an integral element of 21st century policing. That is why the MPA is working hard to ensure local communities and local accountability are at the heart of Met policy.”

Other items on the agenda include:

• Progress report on Safer Neighbourhoods implementation and impact on crime and fear of crime;
• MPS citizen focus policing;
• Review of Independent Advisory Groups; and
• MPA budget submission – interim response

Commissioner Sir Ian Blair will give an update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.
