Statement by Cindy Butts, Deputy Chair MPA, Authority Lead on gun crime and member of the Home Office working group on gun crime

18/07
07 March 2007

“I wish to refute a statement by the Society of Black Lawyers which criticises the work of the Home Office working group on gun crime on which I sit.

“They suggest that this is a one-off exercise involving out of touch people and little more than a photo opportunity.

“In fact, the Home Office group has met six times to look at ways of tackling gun crime more effectively, and far from being out of touch, is made up of practitioners and officials from the voluntary, public and private sectors, and includes families of victims, community groups, police and the Greater London Authority. It demeans their work to dismiss their hard work as little more than a publicity stunt.

“As a member of the Trident Independent Advisory Group, which works with the Metropolitan Police to tackle gun crime within black communities, I am confident we are achieving a great deal and will overcome the gunmen through close partnerships and working together. Undermining that determination does nothing to come up with real solutions. That is what we are working towards on the working group, and I invite the Society of Black Lawyers to support us.”
