Metropolitan Police Authority – April meeting

A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) will be held in meeting room 1 (ground floor), 10 Dean Farrar Street, London SW1 on Thursday 26 April 2007 at 10.00 a.m.

The meeting will discuss a review of public order policing, carried out by the MPS’s Public Order Branch, in consultation with the MPA. The objectives were to review public order policies, tactics, equipment and procedures to ensure they were fit for purpose.

Len Duvall, chair of the MPA, said:

“London is a major capital city and attracts many public order events. These include ceremonial, sporting and cultural activities, as well as demonstrations, protests and marches. In the past year alone Public Order Branch have policed about 300 large-scale gatherings, 500 professional football matches and another 100 sporting events.

“It is essential that public order policing tactics and procedures are transparent, publicised and accepted by the public as well as being cost effective and delivering best value.

“Each event requires the appropriate level of policing to ensure that demonstrators can protest lawfully, and the majority of events pass off without incident.

“Whilst most current public order policing tactics remain fit for purpose, this review was instigated to ensure that, along with other MPS branches, public order policing is fully integrated in the MPS modernisation programme.”

Other items on the agenda include:

• MPA Disability Equality Scheme 2006 – 2009;
• MPS Corporate Volunteer Programme;
• MPS Drugs Strategy; and
• Pan London lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) Strategic Group.

Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson will give an update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.

Please note: the Commissioner's update will take place as near to 12:00 as possible, discussion permitting.
