Metropolitan Police Authority appoints new Director of Strategic Finance for the Met

Anne McMeel has been appointed by the MPA as the Metropolitan Police Service’s new Director of Strategic Finance with responsibility for finance, procurement and property services. With a combined staff of more than 600, she will play a lead role in helping the Service manage its £3bn budget.

Len Duvall, chair of the MPA, said:

“Anne McMeel impressed the panel with her knowledge and skills. Her previous experience as Executive Director of Finance and Performance at the GLA, a post she has held for six years, together with her former senior financial positions with several London boroughs, will help her in this demanding and tough role within the Met, a constantly evolving and improving modern police service. We look forward to the contribution she will make at the Met and will welcome her to meetings of the MPA once she begins work.”

Miss McMeel is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance (CIPFA). She was the first woman president of the Society of London Treasurers in 2002 and sits on the Society’s London Finance Advisory Committee and the CIPFA Local Government Policy Panel.

Her career in local government finance started in October 1973 with the Greater London Council. Following a period as the Strategic Director of Finance and Performance and Information at the London Borough of Sutton, Anne joined the Greater London Authority (GLA) in 2001 as its first Director of Finance and Performance. She has played a leading role in the development of regional government in London including the establishment of sound and robust systems of corporate governance as well as systems to support the delivery of the Mayor’s policies and strategies by integrating business and budget planning across the GLA group. She has, therefore, worked closely with both the MPA and MPS in pushing forward the shared agenda of improving public safety in the capital.

Under her stewardship the GLA received a ‘good’ score from the Audit Commission for its Initial Performance Assessment and has maintained an AA- credit rating from Standard and Poors. The integration of equalities work into budget and governance systems has also resulted in the Authority achieving Level Five of the Equality Standard for Local Government.

Commenting on her appointment, Anne McMeel said:

“I am excited about joining the Met at such a challenging time and look forward to working in such a large, dynamic organisation. I am committed to using my regional and local government experience to make a real difference in helping the Commissioner and MPA meet the policing challenges in a growing and diverse global city.”
