Metropolitan Police Authority – June meeting

The Annual Meeting of the MPA will be held at Westminster Council House, Council Chamber, 97-113 Marylebone Road, London NW1 5PT at 10.00 a.m. on Thursday 28 June 2007.

During the annual meeting members will elect the chair and deputy chair(s) of the Authority. Appointments to outside organisations will also be made.

The June meeting of the MPA will follow immediately afterwards.

Both meetings are open to members of the public and press: please note, facilities for media may be limited by the constraints of the venue.

The Authority will discuss two papers on counter-terrorist related issues: an update on activity to date following publication of the Authority's report 'Counter-Terrorism: The London Debate', together with the Met's response to the recommendations made in the report.

Len Duvall, MPA chair, said:

"While the MPA recognises the need to use all available tools to
prevent terrorism, we are determined policing should be as transparent
and publicly accountable as possible. We believe the public has every
right to ask questions about the way counter-terrorist police operations
are conducted, and the Authority will continue to scrutinise this work
on behalf of Londoners.

"Harnessing the expertise of London's communities and their overriding
desire to prevent further atrocities is the best way we have of
defeating terrorism. The Authority consulted more than 1,000 Londoners
through our programme, 'Counter-Terrorism: The London Debate', and their
opinions were integral to our final report and recommendations.

"The Authority continues to actively promote this community-based
approach to counter-terrorism, and has met with the Prime Minister and
senior government ministers, including the Minister for Communities and
Local Government and the Attorney General, to share our learning and
secure support at the national level.

"The Met will be responding to our recommendations, which we firmly
believe will deliver real change for the better in the way we tackle
terrorism in London and the United Kingdom."

Other subjects to be discussed by the Authority at the meeting include:

• the MPA and MPS Gender Equality Schemes;
• the government's new Model Code of Conduct for members of local authorities;
• MPA accounts year end March 2007; and
• environmental sustainability, a summary of the MPS strategic approach, how it is addressing mayoral priorities, successes to date and forthcoming challenges.

Commissioner Sir Ian Blair will give an update on operational policing issues in London and present a written performance report.
